Business of the Year AwardPeter D’Amico honored at the Newtown Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club
Alan Clavette, President, Rotary Club of Newtown, Connecticut introduced the finalists for the Small Business category representing companies operating with 25 or fewer employees. The finalists are Larry Gardner - The Alternative Board, Sandy Hook Wine and Liquor, and Newtown Hardware. For the larger Business category finalists were Newtown Savings Bank and the BMI Group (Including the SCB Companies and the Newtown Youth Academy).

The Newtown Youth Academy opened its doors November 1, 2008 as a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3), community-centered organization dedicated to the health, fitness and general well-being of all Newtown-area residents. The NYA Sports and Fitness Complex is a 86,000-square-foot, multi-use indoor sports complex on the Fairfield Hills Campus in Newtown, Connecticut providing a safe and positive environment for community activity, fitness, training and sports competitions. During the few short months since it’s opening, the NYA has already hosted several charity fundraising events such as the Giorno & Harmon Memorial 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament and Newtown Youth & Family Services' group Newtown Youth Creating AIDS Awareness for Peers dodgeball tournament. SCB Companies own and manage the SCB Office Park at 153 South Main Street in Newtown, CT. The SCB Office Park is a 40,000 square foot Class A office complex with over ten tenants and private fitness facility. The Chamber of Commerce of Newtown, Inc. is a nonprofit business advocacy, community and economic development association committed to the support of its members' growth and success and the development of a positive economic climate. The Chamber of Commerce of Newtown, Inc is dedicated to the promotion and encouragement of Newtown's business community. It actively supports the expansion of business opportunities on behalf of its members through marketing, networking programs, community-sponsored events, and involvement in local economic development. Chartered in 1939, the Newtown Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community's business and professional men and women. The main objective of Rotary is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development. Peter D’Amico, President and CEO of the Bulk Materials International, was recognized for his vision in creating the Newtown Youth Academy as well as supporting the numerous charities and volunteer activities of his family and employees. During his acceptance of the Award, Peter D’Amico recognized the tremendous contribution of Keith Miller, director of the NYA. “Without Keith Miller, this would not have been possible”
